Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one aspect of a versatile treatment system that forms Chinese medicine. For over 3000 years, acupuncture has brought relief to people of all ages who have suffered with various ailments. The ancient Chinese believed that there is energy flowing through pathways throughout our bodies affecting each level of our being. This smooth flow of energy maintains proper health. When the energy is not flowing properly, or becomes “blocked,” it can create pain and other health issues. The blockages are broken by the manipulation of hair-fine needles stimulating the body in order to restore the energy flow and balance within the body.
Acupuncture’s positive impact has gained notoriety throughout the world and has become increasingly popular in the United States for the past 30 years. Acupuncture is presently considered an alternative or complementary form of medical treatment. Its efficacy is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also recognized acupuncture needles as a medical device. This has lead to the acceptance of acupuncture, by major health insurance companies as a reimbursable procedure.
In 2004,a radiologist team from Harvard Medical School used Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to view changes of blood flow in the brain when the acupuncture needles were applied to points that are believed, in traditional Chinese practice, to affect pain. The radiologists noted changes of blood flow in areas of the brain that are full of dopamine. Conventional medicine believes that changes in dopamine will have an affect on endorphins, the body’s own natural pain reliever and mood elevator. The pain sufferer did not feel the pain when the endorphins were released through this manipulation.
The practice and popularity of acupuncture is gaining momentum. In 2005, nearly 900 physicians were surveyed by HCD Research of New Jersey and Louis Finkelstein Institute of New York. More than half believed that acupuncture is an effective complement to conventional medicine and would recommend it as an alternative form of medicine.

Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a form of health care designed to prevent pain, restore normal function to the body, and enhance the overall health and well-being of those under its care – all without the use of drugs or surgery. By adjusting the spine, a Chiropractor can alleviate pain, reduce inflammation and encourage the body to heal itself naturally. Chiropractic adjustments are gentle manipulations of the vertebrae in the spine to regulate functions of the nervous system and relax muscles and surrounding tissue. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.

Cupping
Cupping is a ‘needleless’ practice commonly used throughout the world to treat such ailments as the common cold and other upper respiratory conditions as well as digestive and menstrual issues. The procedure is done by creating a vacuum inside a special glass cup and then placing it on the skin. The vacuum will lift the skin generating increased blood flow to that area while improving circulation. Ailments recommended for cupping are muscle pain, gastrointestinal issues, the common cold and other lung diseases (asthma and/or chronic cough), gynecological issues and insomnia.
Gua sha
Guasha is cutaneous stimulation using a round-edged instrument. It is beneficial for the treatment of acute and chronic illness, as well as upper respiratory and digestive conditions. It promotes normal circulation and metabolic processes. The patient feels immediate relief from pain, stiffness, cough, fever and chill. Guasha works well for acute issues. Pressure of the treated area results in small red dots called petechiae. The petechiae disappears in 2-3 days.
